Service Learning at the English Learning Center

Classroom at the English Learning Center

If you or someone you know is looking for a site to earn service learning hours, consider the English Learning Center! We welcome students interested in working with adult learners who are building their English skills. Volunteers can sign up to teach on a regular schedule, or our team can discuss short-term volunteer options.

About the English Learning Center

The ELC offers classes mornings and evenings, online and in person, thanks to staff and volunteers who make it possible for our adult students to learn while also balancing busy work and life schedules. Learners who take English classes with us can also add classes such as citizenship preparation, conversation, and math to their schedules.

The ELC is located at 2315 Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis and is accessible by several Metro Transit lines.

Service Learner Qualifications

Volunteers at the ELC do not need to have any prior teaching experience. Our team will ensure that all volunteers receive the training, orientation, and support needed to make the experience successful. Students are welcome to apply from any area of study – volunteers do not need to plan on majoring in an education-related program. Successful service learners will be accountable, showing up for their scheduled volunteer shifts. Additionally, students who enjoy talking with others and building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds will find the most fulfillment at the ELC. Volunteers at the ELC must consent to a background check.

Getting Started with Service Learning

If you’re ready to sign up, visit our website and fill out a volunteer application. Or contact ELC staff at elcvolunteer@englishlc.org or 612.843.3605.

Continuing at the ELC

After scheduled service learning hours are complete, service learning students are welcome to continue volunteering at the ELC. We also encourage service learners to share their experience with friends and fellow students to help us spread the word about our volunteer opportunities.
